Santa Cruz Black History: London Nelson & Public Education

The history of public school in Santa Cruz begins with the generosity of one man: London Nelson. Culminating another Black History Month, we’d like to share the Legacy Spotlight from our first ever Future Fund Endowment Gala on Mr. Nelson.

Born enslaved, he made his life in Santa Cruz and we have all grown up in his legacy. Happy Black History Month and thank you Mr. London Nelson, from all of us at Santa Cruz City Schools. (From our first ever Santa Cruz City Schools Future Fund Endowment Gala at The Grove at the Boardwalk on 1.31.26 - more info at sccs.net/gala)
