This year, as you may know, Santa Cruz City Schools convened a team we have called The Vision 2030 Committee to address the issue of statewide declining enrollment. We wanted to make sure everyone had a clear picture of what this team and process looks like and what its goals are.

The Vision 2030 Committee is a think tank group—made up of SCCS staff, parents and community members—that meets monthly to discuss and analyze the impact of declining enrollment on our district, with the ultimate goal of making a collective recommendation to the Superintendent on how to use resources to best serve students over the next decade and beyond.

After each meeting, members of the committee will be sharing updates and opportunities for the wider community to provide input as well.

This isn’t a quick process. The committee is taking a considered approach that follows 5 steps leading up to making a recommendation, to allow for a lot of discussion:

  • Step #1 Define the Problem (consider desired state)
  •  Step #2 Provide shared context for everyone engaging in the process
  •  Step #3 Analyze potential causes
  •  Step #4 Identify possible/plausible solutions
  •  Step #5 Select and refine best “consensus” recommendation(s)

Currently, the meetings have covered steps 1 & 2—as a group, we have reviewed enrollment trends over the past 20 years and the current makeup of district services and programs. We have also covered some of the history of public education in our community.

Obviously, it is impossible to predict what will happen in the next decade—particularly with changing variables in our community like increased housing development. We are therefore grateful for your patience as we seek to build contingencies and take a proactive approach to this issue going forward.

We will also regularly be putting out community-wide messages that share our progress. Please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time if you have any questions, thoughts or input.

Thank you!
