Safe Routes to School

Our district embraces the environmental and physical health benefits of walking and biking to school. The City of Santa Cruz has partnered with individual school sites and the Community Traffic Safety Coalition to implement a local approach to an international movement called Safe Routes to School. Maps are available to download from the City of Santa Cruz website.

Street Smarts After-School Clubs Build Elementary School Assemblies

The bright “Slow Down” banners in front of all SCCS elementary and middle schools are part of the new Street Smarts traffic safety campaign from the City of Santa Cruz.

SCCS is proud to be partnered in the Street Smarts mission to reduce the number of traffic-related crashes and injuries in Santa Cruz. The campaign intends to improve the traffic behavior of everyone who uses Santa Cruz streets—whether you walk, bike or drive.

Street Smarts is now hosting after-school “Club Live” programs for middle school students. Club participation is helping to further the Street Smarts mission while students earn community service hours, increase skills, and build relationships and connections to community. Best of all given busy schedules, students need only attend when they can throughout the school year. The clubs are run by Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency personnel.

The Club Live programs are currently focused on creating assemblies for SCCS elementary schools titled, "Preventing Distractions on the Road and in the Car." Students have so far conducted traffic assessment activities to build personal capacity and are learning how to interpret this data for their creation of assembly content. Club Live students will deliver the assemblies at all four elementary campuses plus Branciforte Small Schools Campus in 2018.
