In partnership with the Native Animal Rescue (NAR) Organization of Santa Cruz, the Construction Technology class at Harbor High has built 12 Barn Owl Nesting boxes. Harbor CTE teacher Peter Boscacci contacted Mark Schleicher, a NAR volunteer who is heading the program, to provide students’ construction expertise.

The purpose of the program is to create a safe and effective alternative to the use of poisonous rodent control chemicals. The goal is to increase our local Barn Owl population to reduce the use of deadly rodenticides that are killing a variety of our local wildlife, and even our pets.

Paving a path to higher education, this project also partners with UCSC students from the Predatory Bird Research Group. These students will monitor the nest boxes on the Pajaro River Levee as part of an ongoing study.
